How to build a smart home

How to build a smart home
How many times did you read about smart homes of the future? Stories sound interesting, but it get s much more interesting once you decide to “make your home smart”. The question is, how to effectively implement these systems into your home so you have practical uses for them, without making the installation too expensive.
Basic functions
Functions of a smart home that usually come to mind first are controlling the lights, heating and air conditioning. However, you can take improve this systems significantly and control pretty much everything you can think of. Of course, this depends on how much money you are willing to spend into automation of your new smart home.

First things first – Installation

Designing a smart home is the simplest if you are building an object from scratch. Controlling possibilities are dependent on how flexible the installation network is designed. However, this installation is different from the standard one, because it uses KNX cables.
Controlling equipment is installed into the dashboard with the safety fuses. The system is modular, and each module is autonomous. This means that if a single module fails, the others will continue working. Once the network is established, a simple push on the button is registered by the control unit, which delivers the required command.
The best way to install the network is to guide individual cables to each and every light bulb and jack. There will be more wires, and drilling walls may cost you. however, when done like this, each jack and light bulb can be individually controlled.

Configuring and controlling

Even if you consider yourself being an experienced computer user, for designing and initial programming of your KNX equipment you will need help of a licensed installer. Somewhere on your KNX network an USB is attached on which the computer is connected with your PC’s (not so cheap) software for system configuration. With this software, you can adjust parameters of devices, connections are established and performances programmed. Like with every program, next phase is testing and changing, where cooperation with the licensed installer is equally important. Afterwards comes the most pleasant period of usage, when the controls are entirely in your hands.

Remote controls

Controlling functions of your smart home using internet or your mobile device is based on the server, additional device that is installed in the safety fuse dashboard. This device is connected to the internet in a standard way. Remote access begins with opening the manufacturers web site, and entering user name and password. Safe link is established with your smart home. You can now using web interface check the status of sensors, monitor reports on the events, connect to the security camera, turn lights and other devices on and off. Everything is simple and obvious, and the software is efficient enough so that you can run it even on your mobile phone with a WAP browser.

Final thoughts

Depending on your interests, design of your smart home can be one-time or a continuous project. Every day you may think of various new functions that could be added or improved. This being said, a road to the final configuration of your new smart home may be a long but worthy one!
